OCTOBER 17 – 27, 2013
October will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Sechelt Arts Festival, presented in partnership with the District of Sechelt. This annual tapestry of visual, musical and performance art will run for ten days beginning Thursday October 17 until Sunday October 27 and promises to be one of the best years yet with an eclectic line up of multi-genre concerts, workshops and special events that will interest all ages. Some of the highlights include:
COVERING JONI, ALBUM BY ALBUM
A retrospective of the art and music of Joni Mitchell, from her iconic folk roots in the ‘60s right up to the critically acclaimed recording “Shine,” her recent collaboration with the Alberta Ballet. Matching her visual art to her music, this multi-disciplinary anthology will be performed by an exemplary group of local musicians to mark Joni’s upcoming 7Oth Birthday. This highly anticipated event will be held at the Raven’s Cry Theatre on Saturday October 19.
DANCES ON WATER
The 20th Anniversary Festival Dancers, presented by the Sunshine Coast Dance Society, will perform their vision of art, culture and a message of water conservation through movement, music, sculpture and spoken word in this beautifully choreographed and provocative main stage performance at the Raven’s Cry Theatre, Saturday October 26.
HERE & NOW: CONTEMPORARY ART ON THE SUNSHINE COAST
This year’s art exhibition will explore new ways of looking at the geographical regions that surround the Sunshine Coast through innovative collaborations by sixteen contemporary coast artists. Coordinated by guest curators Karen Benbassat Ali (Satellite Gallery) and Karen Duffek (Museum of Anthropology) the featured artists will use sound, performance, painting, mark making and sculpture to create new works specifically for this exhibition. October 18 – 27 at the Seaside Centre.
WHAT THE HECK is a DOGHOUSE COMPOSTER?
A very creative new music event featuring the sites and sounds of construction tools paired with featured coast musicians. Graham Ord and friends will perform a unique concert while building a doghouse styled composter! From the ripping of plywood on a table saw to the mesmerizing rhythm of hammers and hand saws, this FREE concert event will forever change your experience of the sounds of construction.
Additional events include a fun-filled Family Day, a Guitar Day concert, workshop series, the Scream Dream III Dance featuring coast emerging musicians, a collaborative Heritage exhibit, and Art in the Street.
