This issue’s View takes us into the heart of the Pender Harbour area’s intricate waterways. Taken from just to the left of the Painted Boat Resort, on the ground by foot you’d be a short scenic walk into Madeira Park. From up in the air, clean blue water, islets, and trees still dominate, but here we see the layout of resorts, docks, and boathouses too. This is one of the most protected areas of our shoreline. This means tricky navigation for boaters who must pay close attention to tides. It also means biodiversity. Mark Brezer, who operates SloCat Harbour Tours, knows these waters well. “ . . . the shallows in Whiskey Slough experience up to a 17-foot tide. The brackish waters and lagoons draw an abundance of wildlife, from crabs combing the tideline and sea asparagus to the eagles eyeing opportunities.”
That’s Coho Marina Resort in the middle, with Mary Islet beyond, Dusenbury and Calder islands to the left. Mount Daniel, Harbour Peak, and Pender Hill are in the background, reminding us how lucky we are that a moderate hike will get us such views!
