There's nothing as relentless as spring. Buds form when snow is still on the ground, and the season progresses even when some of us aren't quite ready.
I could easily have interpreted the scene as being touched by the hand of God, with the rays of light being fingers reaching out to touch me with their splendour . . .
What is it about ice? Besides the fact that it is so very familiar to Canadians, it might be that ice illustrates so beautifully the solid phase of matter that we grapple with daily in less appealing forms.
